Watermark: Pot surmounted by crescent containing letters P/BD, approx. 58 x 25 mm (Type B, ff 63-76)
Watermark: Pot surmounted by a bunch of grapes containing the date 1598 and the letters MUT, approx. 48 x 20 mm (Type C, ff 77-122)
Italic and mixed; mostly in the hand of Gervase Holles, 1607-1675 (see Pw V 6/1, 3, 4, 5, 12 and 13). The poems and masque (Pw V 6/2, 6-11) are in the hands of four unidentified scribe. See individual entries for a description of each item.
19th century (?) tan calf leather binding; upper and lower covers of soft calf leather paste board are gold tooled with double line fillet following the edges of the four outer borders, the letter P (standing for Portland) in the centre is gold-stamped, surmounted by the duke's coronet; spine is gold stamped with five double lines from head to tail; a dark brown label reads 'HOOLLES' and the base of the spine reads 'I. 1668'; the 19th century (?) binder added marble paper paste downs and end papers, and two flyleaves in front and back; a gold roll highlights the outer edges of the binding. |
