Variously ascribed to either Dr Jabez Earle, c.1676-1768 (Presbyterian minister) or Mrs Laetitia Pilkington, 1712-1750 (née Van Lewen), the poem's attribution to Mary Barber has been most recently argued by Roger Lonsdale, 'Eighteenth-century Women Poets' (Oxford University Press, 1990, pp. 118-19, 522-23).
