Content Description | The text, in English, consists of nine 8-line verses.
Immediately following the title, and preceding the first English verse, are 5 lines in Latin (Virgil, Eclogues 10 lines 1-3 and 73-4). These are written in the same hand as the title which differs from that in which the English verses are written. An English translation of the Latin text appears on Pw V 428.
The words 'A Canto' are written adjacent to the title and above the Latin verse.
A note on the cover by Francis Needham states that the verses were written by J. Wainwright, February 1724/5 and refers to the commomnplacebook of Margaret, Duchess of Portland, p 293. This manuscript is not amongst the Portland Papers at Nottingham University. |
