The title quotation is Martial, Epigrams 9.97.2.

The text is probably the earliest version of the Character of Atticus later expanded for inclusion in the Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot (Prologue to the Satires) lines 151ff, but written and published as a separate piece about Addison in several earlier versions (see W. Elwin and W.J. Courthope (edd.), 'The Works of Alexander Pope vol 3: Poetry vol 3' (London 1881) Appendix 6, which prints other versions). This version was not published until 1941.

Endorsed in the hand of Robert Harley 'Verses in Imitation Quod &c 1722 On Mr Addison'.
