Italic script, principally in the hands of the 1st Duke of Newcastle and his secretary John Rolleston (c.1597-1681).

Blue leather with triple gold fillet tooling around edges of upper and lower covers, and Portland coat of arms surrounded by gold-stamped crowned garter in centre of both covers; folded edges of leather on pastedowns include double fillets and outer corner stamps; modern binder gave individual guards to most folios in this book, and added 2 front and 2 back modern flyleaves; the items which form this volume were given individual guards by last binder; these guards were specially made so that the top and fore-edges of all folios would coincide in size and give book uniform borders; top and fore-edges are gold graphed.
