There has been considerable discussion on what part, if any, Dryden played in the composition or revision of this work by the Earl of Mulgrave; many contemporaries believed that Dryden had a hand in this satire, a belief which led to the notorious assault on the poet in Rose Alley on 18 Dec. 1679 at the instigation of the Earl of Rochester, or possibly, the Duchess of Portsmouth.
