Content Description | Individual items in this volume are described under references Pw V 2/1-151. |
MS volume containing letters, poems, speeches and other documents copied by Sir John Holles from a variety of sources including some letters and papers of his own authorship. Original documents date from 1587 to 1615. The volume is incomplete, missing pages both at the beginning and apparently the end. The grubby condition of p 238, which ends in the middle of a sentence, suggests that the text was incomplete for some time before being given its modern binding.
The writer consistently renders the name 'John' as 'Ihon'; the modern form is used throughout the catalogue.
The date of compilation is not recorded but is estimated as before 10 Feb. 1623 (see Seddon, Holles Letters, vol 1, p xiv). |
Descriptive Features | Watermark: Pot with tall lid surmounted by crescent, approx. 90 x 25 mm; similar watermark form throughout; variations include four sets of letters within the pot: TC/H, VE, VB, NB/B; horizontal chainlines are not clear.
One italic script in brown ink throughout.
First half of 20th-century plain vellum binding on paste board by Birdsall of Northampton; upper and lower covers are blind tooled with a triple fillet following the edges of the four outer borders; spine, stamped in black, reads 'COPIES OF LETTERS ETC. SIR J. HOLLES'; this binding is similar to that in Pw V 1. |
