This presentation manuscript contains four works in the hand of the author Robert Davenport. These are written on pp 7-18 of the volume. Each of these pages has double red lines drawn around the edges, framing the text. The text is written primarily in black ink, with some words written in red ink. Horizontal lines in red ink appear above and below the title of each poem. Two horizontal lines in red ink mark the end of each poem, with spiral effect drawings in black ink appearing below the lines at the end of the first three poems.
Double red lines appear around the four edges of the original front cover of the volume (p 1), with a further set of double lines drawn in red within these. There follows a title page listing in large capital letters and in red and black ink the titles of the four poems in the volume and also the title of a fifth poem 'A House on Fire', which is not present in the volume.
The four poems are prefaced by a dedicatory epistle 'To the right Ho<noura>ble William Earle of Newcastle Viscount Mansfield Lord Boulsover and Ogle' signed by Rob<ert> Davenport.
Date given by Francis Needham on the fly leaf: 'This ms. was written between 1629, when N. succeeded to the Bothal Estate, and 1643, when he was created a Marquis. [D.N.B.] 1933'. |
