Content DescriptionThanks Lavington for his attention while he lived in the West Indies; thinks that Lavington has stocked his [the dukes's] cellar more than any other governor in the West Indies; refers to some 'events' which no one could have predicted and which have put an end to their official correspondence, and Lord Pelham's; recognises Lavington's vigilance and loyalty to the government, even when his zeal to serve the king led him to step beyond his official duties; comments on his involvement in the expeditions against Danish and Swedish possessions; hopes his letter about Lavington's authority in the Leeward Islands made things clearer; mentions the inadequacies of living conditions for governor's which are inconsistent with the dignity of their offices; has not seen Mr Herbert to whom he is very obliged; reiterates his support for Lavington.
