Content DescriptionHas received the earl's letter [Pl C 52/140]; refers to the earl's and others' efforts in the town of Chard and is sure that good order and authority will speedily be enforced; regrets that the earl had to write what he did about the conduct of the volunteer corps and the measures that had to be taken concerning Combe St Nicolas; hopes however that the power of example will prevent a repetition of the incident, as will the good efforts of the earl; thinks General Simcoe is right to show the utmost leniency to those members of the corps who repent their errors, serve the state, and protect their neighbour's property.
