TitleLetter from William Wenman, Edwinstowe, to Mr [John] Cossen; Jun. n.y. [1724-1736]
DateJune 1724-June 1736
Extent2 ff
Content DescriptionSends Mr Pawson's case on the other side; asks that it be given to 'my Lord' for his consideration.

'John Pawson's Case':

States that an arrear of £40 was paid by the old tenant of Clipston Warren, Robert Spencer, on his entry; also that he spent £100 in building a house and went into debt as a result; mentions that Lord Oxford allowed Spencer to be paid £90 by John Pawson on his entrance; writes that Pawson was lent the money by Sir Thomas Hewett.

Suggests that Pawson's rent may be increased when the money is paid off; adds that Pawson owes the earl for wood sold him by Cossen but that he is financially strapped because of the expenses of moving into the Warren; asks that he be allowed some time to pay the wood account; adds that the earl could let the Warren to someone else at a higher rent because of the improvements made by Spencer.

Date estimated from the 2nd Earl of Oxford's style of address; possibly dated 1724 from other references to John Pawson in this series of letters.
