Content Description'The Case of William Potter Tenant under the Earl of Oxford at Sloswicks Farm near Welbeck': abstract of lease dated 7 Mar. 1717 [/18] to John and George Hancock of Welbeck; note that William Potter married George Hancock's widow; statement that the rent was paid up to Michaelmas 1727 and was then increased on the orders of Mr Morley.

States that William Potter has disputed the rent increase although a valuable barn has been built for him; adds that Potter claims that damage has been occasioned by 'Mr Porter & the Wood Contractors'; [rest of paragraph obscured by damage to the paper]; states that Potter is in debt but is sober and industrious; adds that the farm is in the parish of Worksop and pays tithes at £4 p.a. and a hay tithe of 10 shillings.

Appended letter addressed to 'Sir':

Refers to Kirkby and writes that he has 'endeavour'd to restore the Antient Names of the Grounds'; mentions that Potter has not been to see him although he asked him to at Mansfield market; has assured him of the kindness of 'my Lord' and has told him he has not given enough notice and cannot leave until Lady Day 1732.
