Content Description
Will change his plans in relation to the poll in Elsom's Grove and will meet Mr Brown the next day; had heard rumours firstly that 'Smith has fix'd again wth Sr George Downing', and secondly that Papworth has bought an estate and will live there; gives reasons for keeping Kimpton's farm in hand rather than letting it this year; points out that hay grown there can be used at Wimpole and that animals can be kept there; writes that he was 'in a great affright' about the level of water in the reservoir since the mechanism for draining excess had not yet been built; reports that he had the men work there through the night using lanterns and that reinforcements were called in from Wimpole and Arrington; writes that the water continued to rise 'to the very brink' until mid-morning.
Is sure that if it had rained for two hours more the head of the reservoir would have burst and a number of houses would have been ruined by the surge of water; thinks it a miracle that they managed to clear a passage for the excess and that the head was not damaged; adds that the men deserve extra pay for their hard labour working in water and in the rain; wishes to make the sluice good as soon as possible; believes he can mend the brickwork without causing any extra damage.
Letter dated 3 Jan. 1724/5.
