TitleLetter from William Wenman, Panton, Lincolnshire to [E. Harley] Lord Harley [later 2nd Earl of Oxford]; 17 Feb. 1713/14
Date17 February 1714
Extent2 ff
LevelItem/file
Content DescriptionCongratulates Harley on the order about the Cavendish estate; thinks Nottingham and Mansfield will rejoice their freedom from sequestrators; believes Mr Gace and his son are the 'best Agents in England' and that they will all continue to give service to the Harleys.

Suggests Harley get the college leases and the crown lands renewed; cites example of Dr Firebrace at Trinity College, Cambridge, whose lease Mr Bentley will readily renew; explains that the old lease is in the custody of the duchess [of Newcastle]; refers also to a lease at Barton Ferry and the duchy lease of Bassetlaw 'ultra et citra Trentum', of which he gave Mr Auditor and Mr Dixon an account.

Gives considerable detail about a farm called 'Cawqueel' [Cawkwell], in Lincolnshire, bought by a man called Parker; thinks that the duchess [of Newcastle] may have the purchase deeds for it; reports that this Parker was a 'fat fellow' who 'bought a Butcher's Wife in Clare Markett'; is helping Gace with his accounts which are very long and have not been passed since 1711; discusses the effects of the law suit on the rents; will try to return to Nottinghamshire next week and will receive the duke's commands at Mansfield.
