Content Description | Since he posted his last letter he has received a letter from the undersheriff [W. Seagrave] relating to a post fine, which he asks whether he should pay; provides transcription of undersheriff's letter and his own [Wenman's] answer to it.
Copy letter from W. Seagrave, dated 'Nottingham Aug 29th 1723' reports that there is a post fine of £25 on Mr Harley's estate; adds that the fine was levied last Hilary term to Mr John Hiccocks from Mr Edward Harley of the manor of Sibthorpe and a number of lands in Sibthorpe, which he then lists; hopes that Wenman will help him get the money, so that he is not forced to distress the estate.
Copy letter from Wenman to Seagrave, dated September 2nd 1723, comments that if he had known about the fine before he could have dealt with it when he was in Nottingham with Mr Walter and Mr Thomas Smith; adds that he will write to Lord Harley for his order to pay the money, and then will pay it to Seagrave in Nottingham; realises that Lord Harley must be unknown to Seagrave, or he would know there would be no need to bring distress upon his estates. |
