Content Description | For more detailed descriptions see sections Pl F9/1-11 below.
The greatest portion of the material in this section (Pl F9/4-9/7) concerns Lady Harriet Bentinck, the elder sister of the 5th Duke of Portland. It includes domestic accounts and material relating to her investments (much in mortgages linked to the development of the Ladbroke Grove area of London), as well as numerous drafts of her will (through which the rises and falls in favour of various nieces and nephews may be charted). A further group of papers concerns her niece and principal beneficiary, the Duchess of Sermoneta (Pl F9/9).
Smaller quantities of papers relate to her elder brother, the Marquess of Titchfield (d. 1824) (Pl F9/1), her younger brother Lord Henry (Pl F9/2), her sister Viscountess Ossington (generally known as Lady Charlotte Denison) (Pl F9/3), and the litigation with and concerning her sister Lady Mary Topham (whose unsuitable match caused attempts to be made to cut her off, not without a penny but with far fewer than her siblings) [see also bundle Pl L5/2]. Pl F9/10 contains miscellaneous items relating to the Howard de Walden family (descendants of the only child of the 4th Duke of Portland to leave issue); Pl F9/11 is a single document relating to Lord George Bentinck. |
