Despite his marriage to one of the coheiresses of the Wriothesley family, Earls of Southampton, the 1st Duke of Portland's financial affairs seem to have been unsatisfactory, even before his misadventures in the South Sea Bubble. The series of deeds executed in 1722 before he left to govern Jamaica were to protect his property from the 'South Sea creditors' but point to earlier problems. See sections Pl F2/6 for the South Sea transactions and litigation, and Pl F2/7 for other related material. |
