Content Description
For detailed descriptions see Pl F2/1/1-27 below.
The material here comprises copies of the grants made by King William III to the 1st Earl of Portland - Hans Willem Bentinck, his follower and adviser. These were in reversion upon the death of Catherine of Braganza (see Pl E1/5 for further related material). The copies seem to date from the 1730s and were possibly prepared in connection with the marriage settlement of the 2nd Duke of Portland. There is further material relating to the 1st Earl's second marriage and the affairs of his Dowager who lived until 1751. The different interpretations placed on English and Dutch wills of the 1st Earl produced litigation in the two jurisdictions.
