Content Description | For more detailed descriptions see sections Pl F10/1-12 below.
This is a rather disparate section. Settlements and related material of the 6th Duke (Pl F10/1) are followed by his Income Tax affairs, particularly regarding the Welbeck Stud (Pl F10/2), and the affairs of Kingsclere Racing Stables Ltd (Pl F10/3), in which he had a large financial interest. The Sutherland and Caithness Handmade Carpets Association Ltd (owned with the Duke of Sutherland) is an example of philanthropic investment in the north of Scotland (Pl F10/4). More serious investments, at home and abroad (Pl F10/5 and Pl F10/6) are followed by loans and mortgages (Pl F10/7), many to indigent relations, former employees and other persons connected with the Duke, and on less than commercial terms.
The Duke of Portland's Advisory Board, audit papers and the Welbeck Estates Company Ltd (Pl F10/8-Pl F10/10) form a further block. A settlement and a few other papers of the future 7th Duke (Pl F10/11) and a miscellaneous bundle conclude the section.
For petitions to the courts for expenditure of settled funds/expenditure by the 6th Duke of Portland as tenant for life allowed to be charged to settled funds in connection with estate improvements, see Pl E12/14 in connection with the Welbeck estate (and Pl E12/15 for Welbeck Abbey). See Pl E1/10 for general estate improvements. |
