Content Description | The Portland estates in Lincolnshire were of diverse origin. Some descended from the Cavendish and Holles Dukes of Newcastle; whereas the Manor of Grantham (see Pl E9/1) was one of the many properties granted to the 1st Earl of Portland by William III, and, like most of those properties, sold in the time of the 3rd Duke of Portland. Most of the material here relates to later purchases and exchanges by the 4th Duke of Portland and sales in the time of the 6th Duke. |
