Content DescriptionFor detailed descriptions see Pl E17/1-5 below.

There were various distinct and overlapping Bentinck family interests in the King's Lynn area: that of the descendants of the 1st Earl of Portland's second marriage; that of Lord William Bentinck and his successors; and that of the 4th Duke of Portland and his successors, initially as purchasers from and lessors to Lord William. Only after the Bentinck v Portland law suit of the 1870s are the last two interests finally and fully united. And only such later material is listed here - otherwise see section Pl F8, which includes vouchers for the period immediately before and after the purchase of the remaining interests of Lord William's representatives.

This complex history is the reason for placing Norfolk in the catalogue at this point.
