This material relates entirely to Grove House at Norwood, Surrey, whose lease was bought by the 4th Duke of Portland in 1839 and surrendered by his successor in 1860. The freehold belonged to the Du Cane family, a city family who had migrated to Essex and who remained prominent landowners on the southern fringes of London. Their name is commemorated in Du Cane Court, Balham.
