This section deals with the estates of the Duke of Portland and their Cavendish/Holles/Harley predecessors overall; plus material relating to more than one estate or of uncertain attribution.

It has been found convenient to include here estate material for the Holles family, Earls of Clare in respect of properties inherited subsequently by the Pelham-Holles/Pelham-Clinton Dukes of Newcastle.

The sections are: Pl E1/1, estate accounts etc. relating to William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle, 1652-1668; Pl E1/2, estate accounts and occasional deeds etc. of the Holles family, Earls of Clare, 1640-1688; Pl E1/3, estate accounts, vouchers etc. relating to John Holles, Duke of Newcastle, 1694-1713; Pl E1/4, two items relating to the estate of Henrietta, Countess of Oxford and Mortimer, 1741-1753 (see Pl F3/4 for trust accounts); Pl E1/5, accounts, rentals, etc. relating to the 1st Earl of Portland and the 2nd Earl/1st Duke of Portland, 1700-1723; Pl E1/6, accounts, rentals, vouchers, etc. relating to the 2nd Duke of Portland, 1726-1758; Pl E1/7, accounts, rentals, vouchers, etc. relating to the 3rd Duke of Portland, 1773-1801;

Pl E1/8, some fire insurance receipts, 4th Duke of Portland; Pl E1/9, appointments of agents and receivers by the 4th and 5th Dukes of Portland, with related papers, 1828-1854; Pl E1/10, material relating to improvement loans on the estates of the 5th and 6th Dukes of Portland, 1881-1886; and Pl E1/11, material relating to the taxation of land values and minerals under the 1910 Finance Act, 1910-1921. Pl E1/12/1 is an early rental severely fire damaged.
