Admin History | Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne, was the son of Henry Clinton, 7th Earl of Lincoln and nephew of Henry Pelham and Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne. He was styled 9th Earl of Lincoln until he succeeded his uncle in 1768 and adopted the surname Pelham. His influential connections secured his advancement, and he was made Lord Lieutenant of the counties of Cambridgeshire in 1742 and Nottinghamshire in 1768. Other appointments included that of Privy Councillor, Cofferer of the Household, Comptroller of the Customs for the Port of London, Knight of the Garter and High Steward of Westminster. Although the 2nd Duke did not pursue a political career, he was active in local elections and, through his political and other patronage, had considerable influence and extensive contacts with the leading politicians of his day. |
Custodial History | These papers form a sub-group of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection (Ne) and are part of the political papers fonds (Ne C). They were part of the first deposit received from the 9th Duke of Newcastle in 1955 and were accepted in lieu of estate duty in 1981. |
Description | The collection contains the Duke's correspondence including that with his uncles, Henry Pelham and Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne, discussing private and official business; statesmen and politicians such as Lord Bute, Lord North, Lord Hardwicke, William Pitt the elder and the younger; his agents about local politics and estate business. Of particular interest is his correspondence with his cousin, General Sir Henry Clinton, during the American War of Independence. |
