Admin History | General Sir Henry Clinton (c.1738-1795) was the son of George Clinton (c.1685-1761), who had been Governor of Newfoundland, 1732 and New York, 1741, and was the younger son of Sir Francis Fiennes Clinton, 6th Earl of Lincoln. General Clinton was a distinguished soldier who served in Germany, 1760-1762 and North America, 1766-1782, during the American War of Independence. He was cousin to the 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne. |
Custodial History | These papers form a sub-fonds of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection (Ne) and are part of the political papers fonds (Ne C). They were part of the first deposit received from the 9th Duke of Newcastle in 1955 and were accepted in lieu of estate duty in 1981. |
