| Admin History | Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573-1624) was Shakespeare's patron and a close friend of Lord Essex, in whose conspiracy he was involved in 1601. This involvement led to a death sentence which was commuted to life imprisonment in the Tower of London. He was pardoned by James I in 1603.
Lady Rachel Russell (1636-1723) was the daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton. She first married Francis, Lord Vaughan and later William, Lord Russell, who was executed for high treason in 1683 afer being found guilty of involvement in the Rye House Plot. |
| Custodial History | These papers form a sub-fonds of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection (Ne) and are part of the political papers fonds (Ne C). They were part of the first deposit received from the 9th Duke of Newcastle in 1955 and were accepted in lieu of estate duty in 1981. |
| Description | This is a small series of correspondence from Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton and his grand-daughter, Lady Rachel Russell née Wriothesley.
A small part of the collection (7 letters) covers the 3rd Earl of Southampton's attempts to regain royal favour and patronage after a disagreement with James I's favourite, Lord Buckingham.
The collection of Lady Russell's letters (28 letters) includes correspondence from her family and friends, mainly after the execution of her husband for high treason in 1683. The letters include a series from Henry de Massue, Earl of Galway and Marquis de Ruvigny while in Dublin 1699-1700.
It is not clear how this small collection of Wriothesley family papers came to be amoung the correspondence of the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne at Clumber. There is no direct connection between the Wriothesleys and the Pelham-Clintons. |
