Content Description | Reports news that Lord Rochester is to govern Ireland; comments that he has always held him in high esteem but anticipates that he will take different measures from his own; notes he is torn between his inclination to retire and his sense of duty in the King's service; believes he will be asked to remain as head of the army but notes that he has time to reflect and asks Lady Russell for her advice.
Refers to the thoughts evoked by the death of the Spanish King and the difficulty of expressing these in a letter; comments that the French King has acted less in the interests of the state than in those of his own glory but notes that after his death the new King of Spain or his successors will have much to contribute to the downfall of France. |
