Date2 September 1699
Extent2 ff
LevelItem/file
Content DescriptionReports on the affairs of Lord Tavistock and on gambling debts incurred at Rome, where he lost 400 "pistoles" [old money equivalent in weight to the louis] to the Princess of Carpegne; reports that he was only able to pay 200 of this himself and the rest was paid by the Cardinal de Bouillon at the request of a Scottish monk [a "recolet" - reformed Franciscan]; relates that this money has not yet been repaid and the Cardinal has suggested that the equivalent of 200 louis be put towards the purchase of English horses and their transportation to Pontoise; discusses arrangements for this undertaking.

Urges Lady Russell not to be angry with Lord Tavistock; speculates on the possibility that there may be other outstanding debts; states that he will encourage Tavistock to keep her informed and suggests that she say nothing for the moment but make arrangements for the horses; acknowledges that she could as well send the money but indicates that it would be more courteous to send the horses in recognition of the Cardinal's service to Lord Tavistock.
