Content Description | Testator: John Holles, 3rd Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Gives Orton House and messuages, farms and lands in Orton, Huntingdonshire to Margaret, his wife in fee; bequeaths to his daughter, Henrietta Holles, all of his property in Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland, except those in Yorkshire which were of his own purchasing; all other property willed to his nephew, Thomas; the remainder to his first son and other sons in tail male; remainder to Henry Pelham; remainder to William Vane [later Lord Vane] and his sons in tail male; remainder to Gilbert Vane [later Lord Barnard] and his sons in tail male; final remainder to the testator's right heirs for ever.
Will includes the proviso that whoever takes the honours will assume the surname of Holles; also gives to his wife the use of all his gold and silver plate for life; after her death it passes to whoever is possessed of the honours devised to Thomas Pelham; also gives his leasehold estate, Pontefract Park, Yorkshire to Robert Monkton; further small bequests including £1,000 each to his sisters, Henry, Lord Herbert, Henry Paget and so on; requests that he be buried in the vault of St Peter's, Westminster and that a monument be erected there not exceeding £2,000 in value.
