Admin History | The family members whose political and personal papers form the bulk of the Newcastle Correspondence collections include Henry Pelham (1696-1754), brother of Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne and father-in-law of the 2nd; Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne (1720-1794); his grandson Henry, the 4th Duke (1785-1851 and his son Henry, 5th Duke (1811-1864).
There are also smaller groups of papers of General Sir Henry Clinton (1738-1795), cousin of the 2nd Duke, and of two members of the Wriothesley family, Henry, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573-1624) and his grand-daughter Lady Rachel Russell (née Wriothesley 1636-1723), whose relationship to the Pelham-Clintons is not clear. |
Custodial History | These papers form a fonds of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection. They came originally from the Library at Clumber Park and were deposited via the Warminster Estate Office in 1955 as part of the first deposit of estate and family papers from the 9th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne.
Papers concerning members of the family who had held official or political office (Ne C 36-14145) were catalogued and indexed in detail in 1995-1999 thanks to a JISC (Non-Formula Funding) Award. |
Description | Included within this group are different series comprising correspondence of the family members concerned. Although the political offices held by different family members and their range of political interests and activities have given a particular subject focus, the collection also includes long runs of family and domestic correspondence, and contains papers relating to the estates and property.
Full biographical details about the different family members and descriptions of the individual sub-groups of political and associated papers are found under their separate references. Due to the size of this collection the sections are delivered separately on the Manuscripts Online Catalogue.

Ne C 14146-14729 A small and miscellaneous collection of papers of Henry P.A. Pelham-Clinton, 7th Duke, is also present. This includes correspondence relating to the dedication of the new church at Clumber (1889), the Duke's American visit in 1888, and his marriage to Kathleen F.M. Candy in 1889.
Ne C 14730-15406 The final miscellaneous series of the Newcastle Correspondence Collection is largely concerned with genealogy, and particularly with the 4th Duke's efforts to trace the early history of the Clintons. The Collection originally held a series of autograph letters of famous people, purchased by the 5th Duke 1859-1862. These are now represented in the Collection by surrogate copies.
Ne C 15404-6 Also present in the final section are three volumes of the 16th-17th centuries, comprising letter books of John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare and a commonplace book of John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare. |
