Admin HistoryThis is an artificial collection group, which brings together a number of small collections concerning meteorological recordings in Nottinghamshire.

The records of Colonel Henry Mellish (1856-1927) were taken at Hodsock Hall, Nottinghamshire, where a station was maintained from 1875 through to 1925-26. Colonel Mellish made daily observations on the weather at Hodsock, which he published annually (Met/Me). He was President of the Royal Meteorological Society 1909-1910.

The records of Mr A.B. Tinn of Woodthorpe, Nottingham concern the station which he opened at Burford Road, Nottingham in 1916, where records were maintained until 1935 when the station was transferred to Calstock Road, Woodthorpe, and continued until 1961 (Met/Tn). For many years Mr Tinn was a regular contributor on weather matters to the Nottingham Guardian, and wrote a number of articles for the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society.

The sunshine records of Thomas L.K. Edge were made at Strelley Hall, Nottinghamshire between 1921 and 1932 (Met/Ed).

The largest group of records are those of the weather station maintained by University of Nottingham Geography Department, predominantly between 1962 and 1981 (Met/Ug).

Smaller records include two photographs of the observatory of J.H. Lowe at Beeston, Nottinghamshire (Met/Lo), and a meteorological diary kept at Clifton, Nottingham, between 1964-1965 (Met/Do).

The collection also contains a group of records kept by Mr Barry Elliott, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s. These have not yet been fully catalogued (Met/Be). Meteorological Records of H. Vernon Radcliffe, M.B.E., 1960s-2011, have also been acquired but not yet catalogued (Met/Ve).
Custodial HistoryThe records have come to the University library from various sources over the years. Some accruals have been made since the main Collection was catalogued.
DescriptionThe collection is divided into eight distinct groups, each of which represents the records for a different source of meteorological observations of a broadly similar nature. They contain documents recording temperature, pressure, rainfall and sunshine in Nottinghamshire between 1841 and 2011.

See individual sub-fonds records for more details about each collection.
