Admin HistoryBertrand Hallward was born in 1901 and educated at King's College, Cambridge, where he read Classics. After teaching briefly at Harrow, he was elected as a Fellow of Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1923. In 1926 he was appointed as a Classics lecturer for Cambridge University. From 1939 he was headmaster of Clifton College near Bristol, but in 1947 he moved to Nottingham as the first Vice-Chancellor of University College, Nottingham. A royal charter giving full university status to the college was granted in 1948. Hallward remained as Vice-Chancellor until his retirement in 1965, and oversaw a massive growth in building development and the student population of the university. On 19 March 1965, Hallward had the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws of the University of Nottingham conferred upon him. In his retirement, Dr Hallward enjoyed sailing and historical research. The University Library at Nottingham was re-named the Hallward Library in 1989.

DescriptionThe collection comprises the following:

Bundle of papers relating to Hallward's family history. Includes photocopies and extracts from books concerning the Gurdon family of Assington, Suffolk (Hallward's maternal ancestors); the descent from Sir Gervase Clifton of Clifton, baronet, through the Parsons and Lambarde families to Mary Lambarde, wife of the Rev. John Hallward, vicar of Assington (d 1826); photocopy will of Thomas Hallward of the city of Worcester, 30 May 1785; details about later Hallward family members; and papers relating to the alleged origin of the Hallward name from the Scandinavian 'Halle Warde', warden of the hall, and to St Halvard, the patron saint of the city of Oslo, Norway (MS 519/1);

Papers relating to the American film and stage actress Gloria Grahame (1925-1981), granddaughter of Reginald Francis Hallward (1858-1948), illustrator, who was a cousin of Bertrand Hallward's father. Includes correspondence from Charles Kidd, editor of Debrett's Peerage, 1985-1988, and a copy of Kidd's 'Debrett Goes to Hollywood' by Charles Kidd (London: George Weidenfeld and Nicholson Ltd, 1986); and a copy of 'Film Stars don't die in Liverpool' by Peter Turner (Penguin Books, 1988), a memoir concerning Turner's relationship with Gloria Grahame (MS 519/2);

Typed address made by Hallward at the ceremony naming the University Library the Hallward Library on 6 October 1989 (MS 519/3);

Two prints of a pencil portrait of Hallward by K. Green, 1925 [drawn as part of a series of portraits of the Fellows of Peterhouse] (MS 519/4);

Additional items deposited in January 1990, with accompanying letter from Hallward, comprising: material about the illustrator Reginald Hallward; a picture of the seal of Oslo Cathedral, with reference to St Halvard; and text of an after-dinner speech concerning the architecture of Hallward Library, marked 'not for publication' (MS 519/5);

Additional item deposited in September 1990: Bertrand Hallward's CV, with accompanying letter from him (MS 519/6);

Additional items deposited in May 1991: Typescript extracts from letters of condolence on the death of Hallward's wife Margaret in January 1991, with a copy of the address made at her funeral (MS 519/7);

Additional items deposited in October 1991, with accompanying letters, comprising: correspondence about a photograph of Winston Churchill visiting Clifton near Bristol in 1946; photocopy of a drawing by Reginald Hallward of the death of St Halvard, 1912; and colour photograph of Bertrand Hallward, n.d.
