Admin History | The volume records fords visited during 1964 by Bruce Shawyer and David Sowerby whilst members of staff at the University of Nottingham.
Dr Bruce Shawyer was a member of the University's Department of Mathematics from 1962 to 1966. He worked at the University of Western Ontario from 1966-85, and then joined Memorial University in Newfoundland as a professor and head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Dr D.B. Sowerby was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham until the early 2000s.
Both were tutors at the student hall of residence, Derby Hall. Both were new to Nottingham and spent their weekends exploring the area, conducting this research into fords. |
Custodial History | The volume was acquired by Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham in March 2005. |
Description | The collection comprises a single volume containing typed pages. The volume records 50 individual fords in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. For each ford, the following information is provided: location, map reference, plan, date visited, road type, road surface, depth, length, pedestrian crossings, and 'AORI' (details of access, warning signs, and alternative routes). Most pages are accompanied by sketches and black and white photographs.
