Admin History | Nothing is known about the Bachelors other than that they were a committee of Nottingham dignitaries who arranged prestigious balls (parties). The 6th Duke of Portland was one of 60 bachelors who gave the 1880 Bachelors’ Ball, which led to the formation of the Bachelors’ Club. The minute book in this collection refers to the arrangement of Bachelors balls in 1905, 1909, and 1912. It records that plans to organise a ball in 1928 were abandoned. The president for every ball was Lt Col Richard Leslie Birkin (1863-1936), who, in civillian life, worked for his family's lace manufacturing business. He married in 1929. |
