Admin HistoryThis poll book is undated but clearly relates to the parliamentary by-election held in Northamptonshire in 1730, upon the death of Sir Justinian Isham, 4th Baronet. He had been M.P. for the county of Northampton since 1715. The election resulted in a victory for Isham's son, Sir Justinian Isham, 5th Baronet, who held the seat until his death in 1737. The Whig candidate, William Hanbury, was narrowly defeated. Manuscript poll books were normally collected and retained by the Justices of the Peace in the Quarter Sessions for the county.
Custodial HistoryThe volume was given to the University library in the late 1930s. Nothing is known about its creation or provenance.
DescriptionThe 1730 poll book contains a list of names of persons polling for the two candidates, Sir Justinian Isham, Bart., and William Hanbury. The 'Place of Abode' of voters is given. Names are listed according to parish, with parishes appearing in alphabetical order within hundreds.
