Admin History | After two early attempts to establish a chamber of commerce in Nottingham, the leading hosiery and lace manufacturers in the city of Nottingham finally succeeded in 1860. Since its year of foundation, Nottingham Chamber of Commerce played an important role in the community of Nottingham through its involvement in issues such as commercial education and training, the improvement of working conditions, the development of industrial machinery and in giving support to local industry and commerce. The chamber's main concern was to establish Nottingham's reputation as a centre for producing high quality goods. Nottingham Chamber of Commerce no longer survives in its original form. The interests of business in the county are now represented by the Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry. |
Custodial History | This collection was given to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in 1968. |
Description | The collection comprises:
Petition of the chamber to the UK parliament with regard to coal mining, 1908 (MS 185/1).
Cash book, 1916-1926 (MS 185/2).
Papers relating to the presentation by the chamber of an aeroplane to New Zealand, 1917 (MS 185/3).
Report of conferences between the chamber and the City of Nottingham Teachers Association, 1927 (MS 185/4).
Papers relating to gravel pits and the Midland Gravels Association, 1933-1958 (MS 185/5-6).
Memorandum and articles of association for the Association for Overseas Exporters (1919) Ltd, 1908-1919 (MS 185/7).
This collection constitutes chance survivals from the records of the Nottingham Chamber of Commerce. Apart from the cash book (MS 185/2), it contains none of the administrative records that would usually survive in an organisation's archive. The files would provide supplementary information for any study into the activities of the Chamber and the initiatives to which the files relate. |
