Admin History | The project to publish the complete letters of D.H. Lawrence began with a meeting at the University of Nottingham in Jun. 1972. Attendees were Michael Black of CUP, James T. Boulton, Keith Sagar, Harry T. Moore, F. Warren Roberts and and Gerald Lacy. Black recommended to syndics of CUP that they take on the project, and an agreement was made with Laurence Pollinger Ltd, as literary trustees of the Lawrence Estate. Black's decision publish a critical or scholarly edition of Lawrence's complete works came the following year in 1973, although it took a further 18 months before Pollinger agreed to the project. Lawrence's publishers Heinemann and Viking declined involvement in the project, leaving the door open to CUP. Pollinger eventually agreed to the undertaking, prompted by the imminent expiration of copyright in Lawrence's works in 1980. The first volume in the Letters series was published in 1979, and the first volume of the Works series in 1980. The project was concluded in 2014.
In 1973 The Editorial Board for the Letters project comprised: James T. Boulton, George Zytaruk, Harry T. Moore, Warren Roberts, David Farmer, Gerald M. Lacy and Keith Sagar.
In 1978 the Editorial Board for the Works project comprised: Michael Black as representative of Cambridge University Press, James T. Boulton (with assistance from Andrew Robertson), Warren Roberts (with assistance from David Farmer), and Carl Baron acting as textual consultant.
Mermbership of the Editorial Board/s has changed over time, with the notable addition of Lindeth Vasey and John Worthen in 1983, replacing Carl Baron, David Farmer and Andrew Robertson. |
Custodial History | The papers were transferred to the University of Nottingham in four separate deposits during the period 1997-2004 via Prof. John Worthen, acting as member of the Editorial Board for the Cambridge University Press Lawrence edition |

Arrangement | Partial arrangement was undertaken shortly after acquisition of the main bulk of the collection in the late 1990s. Papers were arranged into three categories: General CUP papers relating to the Lawrence edition, papers relating to individual volumes in the series, and copies of original material held elsewhere. Although attempts have been made to maintain this arrangement during cataloguing work undertaken as part of the 'Unlocking the D.H. Lawrence Collection' project (an ARC funded project undertaken in 2020-2022), papers acquired after the first acquisition of material in the 1990s have necessitated the addition of a fourth category: Other publications and research papers. |
