Content DescriptionThe earliest deeds in the Holden archive relate to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire estates of the Palmer family, centred on Carlton Scroop and Leadenham in Lincolnshire. Deeds concerning the Standish family's properties again relate to Lincolnshire, particularly Dorrington. A substantial number of documents concern the estates the Holdens acquired from the Atkinson family. These relate to Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire but particularly to the Yorkshire estates of Hartwith, Kirkby Malzeard and Ripon. Further documents relating to Yorkshire are amongst those relating to the lands acquired by the Holdens from the Squire family. These estates include Broomfleet and South Cave, Minskip, York and Ripon.

A final group of documents relate to the estates acquired directly by the Holden family, particularly the major purchases of Hawton and Nuthall. There are just a few items which relate to the Holden family's more recent acquisition of Sibdon castle in Shropshire.
