Description
The primary focus of the collection is on school books and accompanying learning materials published during the years of National Socialist government in Germany. The collection also includes twelve school books published earlier, between 1920 and 1932. It contains school books for all tiers of education: elementary school and lower secondary school (Volksschule/Hauptschule), secondary school (Mittelschule), high school (Oberschule) as well as vocational schools (Berufsschule and Wirtschaftsschule). Divided by learning stages, the collection has the following numbers of dedicated manuals: thirty-three for primary and lower secondary schools, six for secondary school, six for high schools and three for vocational schools.
Divided by subjects, there are fifteen reading manuals (Lesebücher) and sixteen mathematics manuals (Rechenbücher) as well as manuals for geography, history including an atlas, biology, Latin, English, business management etc. There are a number manuals which introduce the National Socialist ideology such as Rassenkunde and four books for young people (Jugendbücher), published specifically to be used in teaching, and covering subjects such as Bolshevism and the World War 1914-1918.
Divided by gender, five books are aimed specifically at girls and five at boys. A significant example of these is a book dedicated to German mothers “Das Mütterbüchlein : den deutschen Müttern gewidmet” edited by Heinrich Burhenne (1938) and a book titled “Heritage and Mission” for boys, “Erbe und Auftrag : deutsches Lesebuch für Jungen” edited by von Paul Habermann, Arthur Laudien and Rudolf Tobler (1939/1943).
