Admin History
The Collection was built up during the 1870s and 1880s by Henry Thomas Hall (1823-1894), a Cambridge man of private means who gave the Collection to Cambridge City Libraries in the late nineteenth century.
Custodial History
The collection was presented to Nottingham University Library by Cambridge City Libraries in 1960.
The University was granted a JISC (Non Formula Funding) award in 1995 for cataloguing the collection.
Description
The core interest of the Collection lies in works of drama or about the stage. It includes items which had previously belonged to the Cambridge Garrick Club. Texts of plays published between 1750 and 1850 make up the bulk of the Collection, although examples both significantly earlier and later are found. The plays cover a very broad spectrum of authors and genres, and include many examples of editions and adaptations of the works of earlier dramatists. From the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries, there is strength in the coverage of women writers.
The history of the British theatre (1750-1850) is well covered, with works about individual theatres and recording productions in them, lives of actors and memoirs, and texts on the theory of acting. Examples of theatre criticism and the theory of theatre criticism are present, although the collection does not seek to cover the study of drama as a literary form. The Collection is added to where possible by purchase and gift.
