| Admin History | The origins of the Midland Electric Light and Power Company Limited are not known but its sixty-seventh annual general meeting was held in 1948, suggesting a start date of about 1881. The company was based in Birmingham and generated electricity which it supplied to the city, to Coventry and to Warwickshire. The firm had a close relationship with the Midland Counties Electric Supply Company Limited from the mid-1930s.
The company was nationalised in 1948 with the rest of the electric power industry and its activities were taken over by the East Midlands Electricity Board. |
| Custodial History | The fate of the bulk of the company's archive is not known. The present collection comprising only of minutes, retained by the East Midlands Electricity Board, was given to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in April 2000 by PowerGen. |
| Description | The collection comprises signed minute books. There are two directors' minute books covering April 1887-March 1948 (BEX 1). They contain information about the general operational activities and scope of the company. The minutes also record the customers that the company supplied electricity to.
There are also two shareholders' minute books covering February 1920-March 1948 (BEX 2). The shareholders' minute books record details of financial and share ownership aspects of the company. |
