Admin History | The surviving minutes for the Melton Mowbray Electric Light Company begin on 15 September 1899, by which time the company was already registered. At the beginning of the following year, it was resolved to construct an electricity generating station on land at the north side of Mill Street in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. The company supplied electricity for street lighting, and for domestic and commercial premises in the town and its immediate surrounding area. The company was nationalised with the rest of the electric power industry in 1948 and its activities were taken over by the East Midlands Electricity Board. |
Custodial History | The fate of the bulk of the company's archive is not known. The present collection contains only minute books, presumably retained by the East Midlands Electricity Board, and was given to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in April 2000 by PowerGen. |
