Admin HistoryGeorge Edmund Milnes Monckton-Arundell was born in 1844, the son of George Edward Monckton-Arundell, 6th Viscount Galway (1805-1876) and Henrietta Eliza, née Milnes. He was ADC to Queen Victoria 1897-1901, Edward VII 1901-1910 and to King George V 1910-1920. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire, Captain of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry and M.P. for North Nottinghamshire 1872-1885. He married in 1879 Vere Gosling, only daughter of Ellis Gosling of Busbridge Hall, Surrey, and was succeeded by his son George Vere Arundell as 8th Viscount upon his death in 1931.
Content DescriptionThe collection includes a large number of letters sent to the 7th Viscount by friends and acquaintances. There are also a considerable number of letters from various family members, in particular from his father, the 6th Viscount Galway, his son Vere Arundell, his wife Henrietta, and his daughter and son in law, Violet and Henry Julian Skeffington-Smyth.

A series of miscellaneous papers, which were originally arranged into 30 bundles, relate to such diverse subjects as waterways, coal mining, fox hunting and military matters and include diaries as well as more ephemeral papers such as recipes and visiting cards.
