Admin HistoryParker Woodward (1845-1931), a Nottingham solicitor deeply interested in the Bacon-Shakespeare controversy, was himself the author of a number of contributions to the debate.
Custodial HistoryHis Baconian collection was presented to the University in 1945 by his son, Mr W. O. Woodward, who subsequently made an additional gift in 1978. It has also been augmented by donations from the Bacon Society, but further acquisition is not actively pursued. It consists of over 300 titles.
DescriptionAll of the works concern in some way the claim that Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Albans, wrote the plays commonly attributed to Shakespeare. Most of the literature was published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but the Collection also includes seventeen pre-1851 titles. Eight works by Parker Woodward himself are present, including one of the two surviving copies of his Sir Francis Bacon...essay by Parker Woodward towards a more correct biography (Leicester, 1920), of which all the other copies were accidentally destroyed. There is a scrapbook containing newspaper cuttings (1901-1911) and another holding leaflets and three letters to Parker Woodward (1894-1927).
