TitleCopy letter in French [from William Bentinck, later 1st Earl of Portland], the Hague, to Eberhard Danckelmann; 22 Jun. 1688
Date Of Creation22 June 1688
Extent1 f
Content DescriptionSays he found His Highness [William of Orange] in better spirits if possible than when he left with regard to their affairs, commenting that the report of [Bentinck's] treatment in Berlin entirely confirms his high expectations of a much desired meeting; says he hopes the elector [of Brandenburg] will be persuaded to come to Cleeve, or at least to Minden, commenting that Danckelmann knows the reasons the Prince of Orange cannot come to Halberstat; states, however, that, rather that not see the Elector of Brandenburg, the Prince will go to [Halberstat].

Refers to the difficulties with regard to the conduct of the Electress commenting that this has been attributed to a letter from the Princess of Orange; but states that Mr Bolswijn [Bodelschwing] had the letter on him and the compliment was as he [Danckelmann] wished; states that to demonstrate his consideration for the elector the Prince of Orange has said that he will try to remove the difficulty regarding the ceremonial between the Princess of Orange and Churvorstin at the meeting, but that this information is only between themselves; it is not assured, since it does not depend absolutely on the prince; assures him that the Princess of Orange is as eager to see the electress [of Brandenburg] as she is to see her.

Informs him that the prince has given de Preusting the commission of arranging matters in Münster, and believes he would like this to be communicated to M. Bosch; states that the prince has heard from all sides that Plettenburg will be supported by Cardinal Furst [Fürstenberg?] [for appointment to the Bishopric of Münster], and has therefore sent orders to work for Reck, or else for Velen, and in case of difficulties with both of these, to assist the brother of the Prince Palatine [Bishop of Breslau]; refers to the importance of working towards the same ends.

Bentinck has been identified as the author in N. Japikse, 'Correspondentie van Willem III en van Hans Willem Bentinck, Eersten Graaf van Portland', Rijks Geschiedkundige Publicatiën (the Hague, 1928), No. 24, pp. 124-125; the letter is not in his hand.
