TitleLetter in French from Eberhard Danckelmann, Berlin, to William Bentinck [later 1st Earl of Portland]; 20 Jun. 1688
Date Of Creation20 June 1688
Extent5 ff
LevelItem/file
Content DescriptionSays they had no news of the success of Bentinck's voyage after their departure; have learned that Bentinck has been recalled to the Hague due to the indisposition of Madame Bentinck; comments that the elector [of Brandenburg] hopes to hear of her recovery soon; adds that the elector is also unwell, being indisposed in his hand; says he hopes it will pass before the 'huldigung' [homage] which will be in four days.

States that the Prince of Orange wrote to Mr Ham that in the present circumstances, he could not go to Halberstad before the electress's confinement but hoped [the elector] could come to Clève after the confinement; says that this will not be possible but that he will pay homage after the confinement at Magdebourg and Halberstad and hope the situation will still allow the Prince [of Orange] to go there.

Comments that everything else is going well; M. de Groot has been there for 8 days; says that yesterday they held the first conference with de Groot, M. de Meinders, Fuchs and himself, but that nothing was revealed regarding the matter of alliance with France; says de Groot assures that this liaison is not prejudicial to the empire but he is less convinced than before.

Adds a post script stating that gout has prevented the elector from writing to the Prince of Orange by that post, and that time will not allow him to do so; asks Bentinck to assure the prince of his devotion; informs him that 'M. de Xb' is there and they have taken measures to interrupt the intrigues of Spaen and Wachtendonck in favour of the Bishop of Breslau [for his appointment as Bishop of Münster], by informing the first that he should not embroil himself in the business of the election in such a manner, and that the elector [of Brandenburg] would like a free election, and by telling Wachtendonck the same, and more especially expressing astonishment that he involved himself in the negotiation without asking the feelings of the court in Berlin.

Concludes by commenting on two of the candidates for the vacant bishopric, Plettenburg and Reck.
