Admin HistorySydney Porter was managing director of Porters ( Derby ) Ltd, house furnishers, and was a keen ornithologist. On his death in 1958, his collection of ornithological books was bequeathed to the University Library.
Custodial HistoryUntil 2007 the Collection was held in the University at George Green Library, where it was actively developed and extended to support teaching needs. In 2007 the older and rarer volumes, including all those in the original bequest, were transferred to Manuscripts and Special Collections, and this part of the Collection is not being added to. Loanable stock retained at George Green Library has been absorbed into regular library stock.
DescriptionThe collection includes a number of finely-illustrated books, often of large format. The subject focus of the collection is particularly on the following areas: taxonomic works (systematic accounts of families and genera); individual bird species not native or visitors to Great Britain; distribution (birds of a specific area).
