Date Of Creation27 December 1745

Content DescriptionAcknowledges receipt of his letter; comments that he never heard 'anything so extraordinary as Pitt's conduct'; suggests that Pelham try to disarm him if he remains 'thus impracticable'; believes they will be able to 'get' Lord Barrington with a commission for his brother and some employment for him; also thinks they may get 'Jemmy' Grenville in this way, describing him as 'sordidly greedy' for a place; comments that he has never heard of one man dictating a whole scheme of foreign politics to an administration; refers to the absurdity of Pitt's opinions; asks if the rumour is true that as soon as the rebellion is over Pelham will quit; states that if he does so it will 'break up the whole machine' and throw 'all into Carteret's hands again'.

Advises that the Duke of Bedford and Gower will be essential to Pelham; states that if they quit, he will feel obliged to do so as well; states that he has no fear of a French invasion, explaining his reasons; states his contempt for the Scottish rebel army; discusses command of their Scottish army; advises him not to appoint Wentworth, who is an unpopular commander and 'goes by the book, and studys Tacticts, which in this case is by no means necessary'; advises Pelham not to show any apprehensions [about the French?] as it discourages people.
