Content DescriptionAssures the Duke of his loyalty and that the King believes 'no one could have done better, in your situation.'; General Huske has been an excellent messenger; reports that Commodore Mitchel has written that Bergen-op-Zoom has fallen but details are not known; reports the intelligence that the French intend to turn to Breda next; informs Pelham that he is assured by Mr Bentinck that it is in a good state of defence but comments on his optimistic judgements 'he speaks this upon the same principles which he does other things, proceeding more from his zealous, and good intentions, than from any thorough information, of the strength and ability of his country'.

Reflects that according to Lord Sandwich's letter the conference at Liege is unlikely to be successful; expresses concern at where more troops can be found, mentioning the Danes and Russians 'what will they cost, and how shall we get the money?'; also expresses his concern at French plans and the risk of leaving England and Scotland under defended 'for I hear the Jacobites are more insolent that ever'.
