TitleLetter from G.H. Vernon, Grove [Hall], Nottinghamshire, to [Henry P.F. Pelham-Clinton] 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne; 6 Jul. n.y. [c.1837]
Date Of Creation6 July 1837
Extent2 ff
Content DescriptionThanks the duke for the 'handsome manner' in which he replied to his application; agrees to give Captain Duncombe his 'unqualified support' in the event of a contest; says he would have preferred the duke's son as a colleague as the gentry dislike the 'interloping of a stranger' at election time; agrees to let 'bygones be bygone'; reports that Mr Foljambe is being 'very coy and difficult' in the northern division and does not appear to want a contest; comments briefly on the electioneering of Mr Houldsworth; hopes that Mr Foljambe's procrastination will have saved Knight from 'imminent jeopardy'; agrees with the duke that the ministers will accept defeated members into the House of Lords.

Thinks it an 'evil political example' that a Barony or Bishopric be the reward for Denison's 'desertion of our section'.

This document is dated 'July 6'; the year provided is based on internal evidence and the bundle date.
